What with inflation being totally out of control, no food and then outbreaks of cholera the situation was extremely serious and those with family and friends an anxious time, as visiting was virtually impossible.

Farming BusinessHelp International has been moving away from Relief and towards Sustainable Income Projects. “This is nothing new” says Sally Murcutt, director of Help International. “This is a tried and successful way to enable people to take up responsibility of their own lives and destiny. For many very poor and disadvantaged the opportunity to be able to take out a small loan is a lifesaver, sometimes literally. We are very excited about this new direction we are moving in.”

Help International released seed funding in 2007 to the Philippines and Zimbabwe. In the Philippines the project has been very successful in enabling many people to take out loans to start small businesses. The re-payment schedule is three months and this means even more families have been helped to lift themselves out of poverty.
